Default 19 March 2011 - our wedding day

At last, here is my wedding day summary!

We arenít able to go on honeymoon for a few weeks yet, so Iím writing this while taking a break at work. We took a week off (the Thursday and Friday before the wedding, then the Monday Ė Wednesday after the wedding). This gave us enough time to get organised. As we live in the city centre of Edinburgh, we just popped on a bus up to Georve IV Bridge to collect our schedule. We then popped into the whisky shop to get posh whisky for the dads, then down the Royal Mile to collect the suit jackets for the boys. It was a really nice day. The next day my sister came over, as did the best man, and we got my bags into the car ready to drive out to Norton House Hotel. Thereís no way I would have got on a plane with these Ė they were sooo full, I think I packed literally everything I owned!! Better to be safe thoughÖ

My other two bridesmaids were at the hotel before me but they didnít seem fussed. Katherine, my best friend, was working in the suite but immediately put down her blackberry and cracked open the champagne on our arrival at 4.30! We started to unpack, then went for a soak. The spa and pool facilities at Norton House are really lovely, quite big too, so we had a good laugh and a catch up. We eventually went back to the room and got ready for the evening festivities. It was an early night after some socialising with our guests who had travelled far and wide to be there for the weekend.

No sooner did I wake up on my wedding day then the makeup artist arrived, followed shortly by the hairdresser, then a procession of mums and bridesmaids to be preened and painted. We had booked a suite on two levels to allow extra space for getting ready. Soon enough it was 2pm and I nearly flaked out! I donít know why but I think the enormity of what was about to happen hit in. My dad arrived and was cracking jokes.

My bridesmaids went in all at the same time, like Charlieís Angels, and I heard it had a big impact. They looked great. Husband had timed my arrival to the music to the second so there was a delay of a few minutes before I went in. I thought my heart was about to leap out of my chest I was that excited!! Nothing prepared me for the gasps and flashes I went into Ė I simply hadnít thought about it. And there it started, the most perfect day of my life.

The ceremony was such a good laugh. We had a humanist ceremony conducted by John Bishop who is the loveliest man. He exudes calm and good humour. I would recommend him to anyone. It was the only ceremony Iíd been to where there was audience participation including some booing at my joke about husbandís home town! But donít let that put you off, it was the way I had written it. The ceremony set the tone for the day. It was so heartfelt, so much fun, so touching and there was so much crying going on! I didnít cry but husband was blinking away tears when I walked down the aisle which was amazing. I walked down to the instrumental of Kissing You by Desíree. We both love it so much.

During the drinks reception, the photographers pulled us over for a few minutes at a time but the rest of the time we were free to mingle. Our photographers Ė Life In Frame Ė were great, really nice guys, fun to be around. You need to like your photographers as theyíre the most interactive of all your suppliers. My only gripe during the reception was nobody bought me a drink! I had to boss one of our guests to go and get me one. Mum said the same happened to her at her wedding Ė so ladies get your drinks orders in and handed to you lol. Before I knew it, it was time to see the room set up for dinner. What a beautiful job they did! Everything was running to time but a table was missingÖ a bunch of old hooligans (MILís friends) had gone back to their room to drink. This held things up but no matter. Trust the oldies haha!

We walked in to the top table to absolute roars! Clearly everyone was enjoying themselves and had been having a bit to drink (which is what we like too) Ė it was just amazing!! I spent ages on the seating plan. Instead of traditional boy girl boy girl, I put people in banter order and it really paid off. You had to shout to be heard, people were enjoying themselves that much. Our speeches were in the traditional order. My dadís was funny and very embarrassing. I will never live it down. Husbandís was long, thoughtful and funny. Best man did a blinder, not embarrassing, but enough teasing of husband to make it good.

Our meal was FAB although I hardly ate any as I was up and down chatting to guests. Then Katherine whisked me back to the suite for a nice glass of red wine (I wouldnít dare drink it downstairs in case a guest bumped me) and for makeup touches up, gossip and a general chillout. Katherine was the perfect bridesmaid, keeping us all in order and running about all over the place. I really appreciated her and her input really helped me. You need a good bridesmaid, at least one who seriously is going to care about you on the day.

We cut the cake on the dancefloor before the first dance to give evening guests a photo opportunity should they want it. I was holding everything up because I wanted to kiss everyone that came in! Eventually my dad dragged me away (kindly) up to the dancefloor and the evening begun. Our band was Dead Manís Shoes and they were astonishingly good. The number of guests who have commented to me on how good they were has been huge. We also hired a sparkly white dancefloor from Greg at Blue Parrot which made the evening. I stayed on the dancefloor pretty much the whole evening. Pretty selfish perhaps but everyone I really wanted to see was up there. Then it was over Ė just like that. I couldnít believe how fast the day went. My perfect day Ė hours and hours and hours of planning, and so much money, and it was worth every single minute and penny. I loved it all. The Norton House were amazing. I couldnít fault them even if I tried. The guests were all treated really well too.

Husband then whisked me off for a surprise minimoon to a hotel on Loch Lomond which was so lovely of him but, sorry to say, we wonít be back. We told them we were honeymooning but they didnít care, and they werenít willing to lend me a bottle opener in case I stole it (I assured them I wouldnít lol and they parted with it). Perhaps it was the contrast of the 4* Norton House Hotel to this supposedly 4* hotel but no matter, it was perfect for a short honeymoon and we didnít really care about our surroundings.

Iíve posted a separate post about my suppliers, so please take a look at that if you would like recommendations. As good suppliers travel I didnít pick on geography but on talent, and I thought they were all great. Glad I did my homework, but most importantly I am so glad I found SWD and you guys. This forum has been the biggest help to me ever, you helped me decide what I wanted, what was important, what I could live without, so by the time the day came I was the happiest bride in the world.
