    Default DIY Ruby Slippers

I'm making my own "ruby slippers" for my wedding day.

I started my pair of "trial run" shoes last night and plan to keep on updating this thread with pictures and reports on how they're getting on. Admittedly it's largely for my own amusement, but feel free to keep an eye on it if you're interested.

I've only done the heel of one of the shoes so far and did it in a garnet colour to match my jewellery which is very dark. I can't quite decide whether to do the whole shoe in garnet or to switch to a brighter red (siam) and just do the heel and bow in garnet.

A fairly bad picture of the first heel. They're not as black as they look but pretty dark still.

I got a Kandi Kane hotfix applicator a couple of years ago so I'm using that and 3mm hotfix crystals at the moment, but I'll probably do another pair with real Swarovski closer to the time.

hey specialsundae, I am loving your shoes and I did exactly the same thing to mine for my wedding. Took hours and hours but I did a wee bit at a time in bed at night and so pleased with the results.

Kandi kanes and hot fix rule. I personally think the siam would be just gorgeous.

    Here are mine

I cleaned up some of the glue which had spider-webbed over the crystals and they suddenly looked much shinier and did the second heel last night. I'm starting to think they actually look pretty good. :-)

It's really hard to decide what to do when DIYing things. It's fun, though.

    More pictures of the shoes.

Do you think the crystals are too spaced out?

    what a great idea.

i was thinking of getting cheap primark shoes for myself and BMs and jazzing them up, i may try this, in clear crystals with white shoes.

where did you get the crystals?? and were they very expensive?

    Hi SpecialSundae

Your shoes look fab, well done! I am so impressed! If I was you, I'd try starting up a wee business! hehe!

I too am planning on buying fairly cheap, plain shoes and jazzing them up a wee bit!

This went back to the drawing board a little when I found out my venue have a ban on stilettos. So I've had some gorgeous new shoes made and this morning I ordered about 6000 Swarovski crystals to cover them. If I have any spare crystals I'll sell them on eBay or bling up bridesmaids' shoes.

You can either use hot-fix crystals and a candi cane (a type of modified soldering iron) or non-hot-fix crystals and glue. I'm going with the latter from other "strassers" recommendations.

You get all sorts of different qualities of crystals from really cheap acrylic crystals at a couple of quid for 1440 to Swarovskis which are upwards of 20 for 1440.

There's nothing wrong with the cheaper crystals but they're not quite as sparkly as the more expensive ones.

Preciosa are a great alternative to Swarovski and quite a bit cheaper at a similar quality.

The crystals arrived yesterday and I've started bejewelling. Here are the first few steps:

Nearly done with the first bow. I forgot how much work it was to do this but I'm getting quicker and the rest of the shoe should be easier.

Thank you so much! I hope the other colour of stones look as good, once I start adding them.
