    Default Day and evening guests

We are inviting approx 90 day guests and a further 40 in the evening. The evening guests are mostly colleagues / neighbours. My friend gets married around the same time and is having 80 for the day and inviting another 150 to the evening! I thought etiquette was just a handful of evening guests instead of having over double your day numbrs, especially when it's not a small wedding. What does everyone think??

That does seem like a lot of people. But to be honest, it's their wedding so their rules.
They might be assuming a lot won't come.

I had never heard of guest etiquette when it comes to numbers! We are having 80 to the wedding and inviting a further 150 to the dance. I guess it depends to who you want to invite... I would say invite everyone you would like to invite as long as you can afford to! The rule of thumb is that only 60% of your invited numbers will come so I would say definitely invite more on that basis.
