    Default My Custom Dress Progress

I had my first proper fitting today. Would anyone like to see my dress as it progresses?

My "dress" will actually be lots of pieces worn together:

    * An underwear corset in deep red silk taffeta with gold contrast stitching and gold lace trim (eventually with suspenders attached for my stockings).
    * A gold silk dupion off-the-shoulder bodice.
    * A gold silk dupion ballgown skirt with cathedral train
    * A Victorian style crinoline with ruffled petticoats for under the ballgown skirt
    * A gold silk dupion 1950s style skirt (for the evening)
    * A huge blood red 1950s style net petticoat
    * A gold silk pencil skirt (for wearing with the bodice at a later date).

The day-time version of the dress is based on this:

Today was the first fitting for the corset and here it is:

    (Excuse the AWFUL facial expression.)

It will have a lot more boning and the busk is still to be added, but the shape's just about right. It won't be collapsing on the bust next time.

I'm quite excited to see it all progress. I'm sure it will be quite wonderful when it is complete.

I've been a casual corset wearer since I was 16. My custom corsets are all pretty comfortable. I haven't worn this one long enough to give a good read-out but it's definitely not uncomfortable and once it's finished (and broken in) I can see it being comfortable.

That said, it's not comfortable in a "I'm collapsed on the couch wearing my jimjams" way. It holds you in and holds you up.

I can do a jive in one, though!

Corsets are like leather shoes. They're wearable from the off, but after a few outings they soften up and mould to your form so feel a lot more comfortable.

The dress itself is gold and my fiancÚ has seen the swatches. He knew even before we got engaged that there was next to no chance of me wearing ivory or white.

He's not allowed to see the actual dress (or the fitting pictures) 'til the day.

It's being made by Emma at Emmeline Couture. She has been absolutely fantastic so far and is doing my bridesmaids' dresses too.

Thank you everyone. I'll look ahead to posting the next round of photos after the next fitting.

Wow... That's going to be amazing!! I've enjoyed reading about your ideas; love that you're making sure your wedding reflects who you are and how individual your plans seem to be

My dress is huge too but doesnt have a corset; I'm asthmatic and can be prone to panic/stressing which can affect my breathing, and I found the corset dresses I tried incredibly uncomfortable to the point where I thought I couldn't breathe. I'm a dress size 6 so with a corset my waist looked proper tiny which I liked, but I thought of eating etc and since I'm not used to them I thought I'd be safer not having one!!
I might get one for wearing under other stuff though and see how I get on, since you say you have to kind of 'break them in.'

Looking forward to the next pics

It's a huge lace affair with a sweetheart neckline, with tulle underneath. The lace kind of trails away towards the bottom. It's a pronovias. I'm going to have a birdcage veil I think, with a pearl headband and pearl choker. Our theme is kind of 1950s I suppose; I love old fashioned glamour, red lips and eyelashes

I had another fitting yesterday. The dress is really starting to come together.

The crinoline starting to come together. There's only one hoop in at the moment but there are channels for another 10-15 to be added at which point the skirt will look rather bigger.

The corset was let out a bit on the bust and is getting closer to being right but still needs a few alterations (and boning) so I was falling out a bit (hence the hands).

Then we started pinning over the toile!

Here it is in our first toile. The crinoline will make it a lot fuller (it was folding in a bit at the back at the moment as it's not finished) and there will be a ruched off the shoulder bodice.

I'm really pleased with how it's coming together.

She is really fantastic. I get on really well with her and nothing seems to be too much trouble. I think my dress is a bit of a nightmare to make, the corset has lots of different panels and gussets with contrast stitching (so nowhere to hide mistakes) and the crinoline will be enormous when it's done, but she's always happy to make alterations to make it perfect. It's been a lot of fun.
